![]() ![]() However, updates to the Google Drive sync application in late 2014 allowed it to sync a folder with existing files, correctly reconciling the changes with Google Drive storage. This meant that pre-populating the Google Drive folder with user files before the user had a chance to sign in to Google Drive would prevent sync from working. Since its initial launch, the Google Drive sync client required the local Google Drive folder to be completely empty when sync was first set up. The natural solution was to use the standard Group Policy Folder Redirection feature to automatically move user folders into the C:\Users\ username \Google Drive location, instead of using it to move the folders to a network share. As such, a backup solution was required that would require the user to change their behavior as little as possible while ensuring that the entirety of their locally-stored data was backed up and could be easily restored to an alternative workstation. ![]() IT staff would also spend large amounts of time transferring files when users had to have their workstation replaced. Numerous difficulties had arisen over the years with this approach, as files would sometimes be lost when hard disks failed. In the meantime, the size of hard disks on individually assigned devices was such that total user data size had grown substantially over the years, and setting an automatic redirection to a network share would have outstripped available file server space several times over. Neither roaming profiles nor folder redirection were in use, so most users simply saved files to the default Documents folder, stored only on the internal hard disk of their laptop or desktop. ![]() While users already had access to both a mapped network share and Google Drive, few users had taken the initiative to store any large proportion of their files either on the network, or in their synced Drive folder (if they had set up sync at all). ![]()

![]() Therefore, the ESR is not the measure of a single marker but a physical process. The formation of rouleaux allows the RBCs to settle at a faster rate, thus increasing the ESR. The settling of the rouleaux aggregates in the Westergren tube occurs at a constant rate. Therefore, an increase in plasma proteins (present in inflammatory conditions) will propagate an increase in rouleaux formations, which settle more readily than single red blood cells. Many plasma proteins have positive charges and can effectively neutralize the negative surface charges of the RBCs, which allows for the formation of the rouleaux. Typically, RBCs have negative charges on the outside of the cells, which cause them to repel each other. The flat surfaces of the RBCs allow them to make contact with other RBCs and stick together. Rouleaux formation is possible because of the particular discoid shape of RBCs. A group of RBCs clumped together will form a stack (similar to a stack of coins) called a rouleau (pleural, rouleaux). ![]() This increase causes red blood cells to stick together (clump) and settle faster. These conditions lead to an increase in the number of proteins in the blood. The red blood cells typically fall at a faster rate in people with inflammatory conditions such as infections, cancer, or autoimmune disorders. ![]() This process of "falling" is called sedimentation. The ESR test measures the rate at which the red blood cells (RBCs), or erythrocytes, in a whole blood sample fall to the bottom of the Westergren tube. Even after the advent of automated machines used to analyze the ESR, the Westergren method was still confirmed as the gold standard in 2011 by both the ICSH and the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI). The ICSH adopted the Westergren method as the gold standard for ESR measurement in 1973. The Westergren method for measuring the ESR proposed by the International Committee for Standardization in Haematology (ICSH) has allowed reproducibility for almost a century. Over time, this same method has established comparable reference values within the same laboratory and even between different facilities across the globe. Together, Robert Fahraeus and Alf Vilhelm Albertsson Westergren are often remembered for the test, historically called the Fahraeus-Westergren test (FW test or Westergren test), which uses a standardized tube and sodium citrate anticoagulated blood. Westergren defined the standard measurement of the ESR that is still in use today. Alf Vilhelm Albertsson Westergren in 1921. ![]() The applied use of ESR in clinical diagnostics by Biernacki was refined by Dr. Because of his work, the ESR is occasionally called the Biernacki Reaction worldwide. These findings were not widely propagated in the English-speaking medical communities. Biernacki detailed his findings in two articles in 1897 (the Gazeta Lekarska in Poland and the Deutsche Medizinische Wochenschrift in Germany) and developed his test for measurements. A Polish physician, Edmund Faustyn Biernacki (1866–1911), later refined the clinical use of the ESR near the end of the 19th century. Perhaps the first to notice a change in blood sedimentation due to illness was a British surgeon John Hunter (1728–93), in his posthumous publication, A Treatise on the Blood, Inflammation, and Gun-Shot Wounds. The tube used for the test is called the Westergren tube. Today, these tubes are made of either glass or plastic, with an internal diameter of 2.5 mm and lengths of 190 to 300 mm. ![]() The Westergren method measures the distance (in millimeters) at which red blood cells in anticoagulated whole blood fall to the bottom of a standardized, upright, elongated tube over one hour due to the influence of gravity. Newer automated systems using closed blood collection tubes and automatic readers have been introduced into laboratories to decrease the biohazardous risk to operators and decrease the time it takes to perform the ESR. However, the reference method for measuring the ESR proposed by the International Committee for Standardization in Haematology (ICSH) is based on the findings described by Westergren a century ago. Over many decades, several methods have evolved to perform the test. The ESR has long been used as a "sickness indicator" due to its reproducibility and low cost. The ESR is not specific for any single disease but is used in combination with other tests to determine the presence of increased inflammatory activity. The erythrocyte sedimentation rate (sedimentation rate, sed rate, or ESR for short) is a commonly performed hematology test that may indicate and monitor an increase in inflammatory activity within the body caused by one or more conditions such as autoimmune disease, infections, or tumors. ![]() ![]() Look smart and set yourself apart with the many useful pockets and all leather interior of our Tech Folio. ![]() ![]() ![]() I have a very particular workflow for this (which I document here and here), which I expected I would do from my iPhone at the end of the day. The most surprising one to me has been using it for journaling in Obsidian. I’ve also found some new uses for the iPad in my workflow. And when my iPad occasionally goes to sleep (seems to happen irregularly regardless of settings), it’s much easier to wake it back up using TouchID on stage than FaceID. But since I try not to look at my music anyway and use it only for reference, it isn’t that big of a deal. If I’m going to see the entire document at once, the iPad mini screen size is honestly a little small. I pair an AirTurn Bluetooth pedal that allows me to turn pages without touching my iPad. I play guitar on the worship team at my church and use scanned documents in GoodNotes for my sheet music. One area where I do miss the larger size is for sheet music. But this has been completely fine and the smaller size of the iPad mini makes it a little bit easier to position it correctly. I also use my iPad as a teleprompter using OBS for presentations and Zoom meetings (details can be found at the bottom of this post), and I was concerned the smaller screen size might be an issue. Being able to physically touch your ideas and move them around feels magical on any device, and the small screen (or canvas) hasn’t bothered me. I also enjoy mind mapping on the iPad mini using MindNode, though not much has changed here since my move from the 11″ iPad Pro. The size of the iPad mini makes it easy to grab as well. In fact, the iPad mini is almost identical in size to my Ugmonk Heirloom journal:Įven though I primarily work from home, I always have my notebook with me. I LOVE the roughly A5 size of the iPad mini. When I first saw the iPad mini announced, I immediately thought that it would be the perfect tool for my sketchnote workflow using GoodNotes. And as I do, I’m finding my usage of the iPad has drastically increased in the last month. I can simply let the iPad mini do what’s it’s good at. I can do it if I need to in a pinch, but I don’t even think about using the device that way.Īnd with the lower price, I don’t feel like the iPad needs to be capable of absolutely everything in order to justify a place in my personal workflow. I don’t even think about sitting down to write with my iPad anymore because attaching a keyboard to a screen that small would be ridiculous. I couldn’t justify the high cost for a powerful “computer” I was going to primarily use as a notebook.īut the iPad mini has significantly improved my relationship with the iPad.įor one thing, the smaller size forces me to abandon some of the use cases that weren’t appealing to me anyway. I was starting to think that the iPad just didn’t have a place in my life anymore. Yes, it’s great for audio editing and taking sketchnotes, but I was increasingly hesitant when considering spending $1500+ on a new iPad (and accessories) if I’m not going to use it “the right way.” ![]() I felt like my use of it was only a small percentage of what it was made for, and I felt more and more resistance when trying to justify an upgrade based on my limited use. This left me in a weird place of not wanting to use my iPad for my “real work.” Even though I create sketchnotes videos every week, I felt like I was not using the iPad the way it was meant to be used. Even though iPadOS has advanced in recent years, I still want to use my Mac if I need to have multiple windows open at once (which I often do for a lot of my admin tasks). But given the choice, I’d rather use my clicky keyboard (or even my MacBook Pro).Īnother example is any kind of multitasking. I’ve had a version of Apple’s keyboard case attached to my iPad Pro since the original keyboard folio for the 10.5″ model, but I don’t enjoy writing on it. It is an absolutely screamin’ machine, and it’s kind of wild to think about how capable and powerful a thin slab of glass can be.īut over the years, I’ve discovered that being able to do something on my iPad and wanting to do something on my iPad have increasingly become two very different things for me. I’ve used some version of the iPad Pro from the moment it was released. I ordered one before the end of the event, and having used it for a month now, I have to say this is by far the most fun I’ve ever had with an iPad.Īnd more importantly, it has completely absolved me of my iPad guilt. New iPhones are cool and all, but this iPad mini seemed like it was tailor-made for how I was (and wasn’t) using my iPad Pro. When it was announced during the September iPhone event, I immediately thought that the sixth-generation iPad mini was the star of the show. ![]() ![]() *Flights traveling 175 miles or less will have only water available.
